Gen Z is increasingly drawn to the gritty, carefree aesthetic known as indie sleaze—a style that defined the late 2000s and early 2010s. Characterised by messy flash photography, skinny jeans, leather jackets, underground gigs and early social media chaos, indie sleaze represents a time that feels raw, authentic and unfiltered compared to today’s highly curated digital culture.
For many young people, the trend is less about reliving the past and more about reclaiming a sense of freedom. The era symbolises a pre-algorithm internet, spontaneous nightlife and creative self-expression without the pressure of perfection. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram have helped revive the look, music and attitude, introducing it to a generation that never experienced it firsthand.
