Bend It Like Beckham* director reveals plans for a sequel and a festive twist on a Christmas classic

Gurinder Chadha, the acclaimed filmmaker behind the iconic 2002 hit Bend It Like Beckham, has confirmed that she’s working on a sequel to the beloved sports drama — along with an exciting new take on a Christmas classic.

The original film, which launched the careers of Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra, became a global phenomenon for its uplifting story about cultural identity, ambition, and breaking barriers through sport. More than two decades later, Chadha says she’s ready to revisit those themes for a new generation.

Speaking in a recent interview, the director hinted that the Bend It Like Beckham sequel will explore how football and women’s empowerment have evolved in today’s world — with the original characters’ legacy inspiring a new wave of talent. “The world has changed so much since Jess first laced up her boots,” she said. “It’s time to see how her journey continues and how the next generation dreams.”

Alongside the sequel, Chadha revealed she’s also developing a reimagined version of a Christmas classic, promising a story filled with heart, humor, and her signature multicultural charm. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do — take a timeless holiday tale and give it a fresh, global perspective,” she shared.

Fans of Chadha’s work can look forward to more of her trademark storytelling — vibrant, emotional, and grounded in community and identity — as she brings both projects to life in the coming years.
