A Brazilian footballer suffered an ankle injury after an unusual goal celebration ended with him falling into a tunnel at the stadium.
Coritiba defender Jacy Maranhao, 29, appeared to score against Chapecoense in Brazil's top division after heading the ball into the net in the 41st minute.
With Coritiba leading 1-0 at the time, the defender ran towards the supporters to celebrate. He jumped over the advertising boards but failed to realise there was an opening on the other side.
Maranhao suddenly disappeared from view as he fell into a passage leading towards the away team's dressing room.
Defender Manages to Climb Out
After the unexpected fall, Maranhao managed to carefully climb back out of the tunnel.
However, the incident left him with an ankle problem, and he was eventually substituted shortly after half-time.
The defender later said that he had twisted his foot during the fall but was not seriously injured.
He admitted that the excitement of scoring had caused him to get carried away.
“For a centre-back, scoring is not something that happens very often,” Maranhao explained. “So when you do score, you can get carried away.”
Goal Eventually Ruled Out
The incident became even more frustrating for the Coritiba player when his goal was subsequently overturned following a VAR review.
Despite losing the goal, Coritiba went on to win the match 2-1 against Chapecoense.
Maranhao's celebration therefore became one of the most memorable moments of the game, even though his goal did not remain on the scoresheet.
Not the First Time at Couto Pereira
The unusual incident was not completely unprecedented at Coritiba's Couto Pereira Stadium.
A similar accident occurred at the same venue in 2014 when Cameroon striker Joel celebrated a goal by jumping over the advertising barriers.
He also ended up falling into the passageway during Coritiba's 3-1 victory over Sao Paulo.
The latest incident has once again highlighted the risks players can face when celebrations take them beyond the normal boundaries of the pitch.
