Burgess set for first England appearance in a decade

Joe Burgess is set to make his first England appearance in ten years after being named in the 19-man squad for the final Ashes Test against Australia.

The 31-year-old Hull KR winger last represented England during the 2015 series against New Zealand and will return to international action under head coach Shaun Wane at AMT Headingley in Leeds on Saturday.

Burgess’s comeback crowns a remarkable 2025 season in which he played a vital role in Hull KR’s treble-winning campaign.

“It’s a credit to him — he’s found a new lease of life at Hull KR,” said Wane, who previously coached Burgess at Wigan Warriors. “I’m so pleased to give him this opportunity; it means a lot to me.”

Reflecting on his return, Burgess admitted: “I always believed I could get back here if I worked hard enough. Once you hit 31, you start to wonder if it’s too late, but I knew I still had the potential. That’s always been the goal.

“This has been the best year of my life — my first Challenge Cup and Super League wins, and now being recalled for England. It’s unbelievable; I’m still trying to take it all in.”

England, who have already lost the opening two Tests of the three-match series, will be without winger Dom Young after he suffered a broken foot.

Australia, meanwhile, make just one change to their starting side, with captain Isaah Yeo returning after missing the second Test due to a head injury. His inclusion sees Patrick Carrigan move back to the front row, with Lindsay Collins dropping to the bench — restoring the lineup used in the opening Test at Wembley.
