Carys Douglas, the daughter of Hollywood stars Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, has revealed her favourite spots to visit in Wales in a new Vogue Travel interview.
The 22-year-old, who grew up primarily in the United States, fondly recalled spending summers with her brother Dylan visiting their grandparents in Mumbles, Swansea — their mother’s hometown.
Carys shared her top recommendations for exploring the area, including local food favourites, family traditions, and must-see beaches.
“I feel so lucky to be from here,” she told the magazine, describing the Gower Peninsula as being full of “weird but magical places.”
Carys also reflected on her “theatrical” family traditions, recalling how summers were filled with singing contests and impromptu pantomime performances.
“It’s true — the Welsh really do love to sing,” she said with a smile.
No trip home, Carys added, feels complete without visiting her family’s favourite local eateries. “My family’s from the Mumbles, so it has to be Johnnie’s Fish & Chips, followed by Joe’s Ice Cream,” she said.
She credited her grandmother, Patricia, for introducing her to the joys of traditional Welsh cooking. “My nana makes the best Sunday roast and Welsh cakes,” Carys shared, describing the cakes as “a bit like squashed scones but wonderful in their own way.”
For those wanting a taste of local culture, she recommended seeing a show at Swansea’s Grand Theatre or the Dylan Thomas Theatre. And when it comes to souvenirs, she loves picking up handcrafted lovespoons to give to friends as meaningful keepsakes.
