From small-town India to World Champions: The trailblazing women who made cricket history

Earlier this week, the Indian women’s cricket team etched their names in history by clinching their first-ever World Cup title—almost five decades after playing their maiden international match.

Their triumph was hard-fought. After enduring three consecutive losses in the group stage, the team rallied to overcome both internal and external hurdles, stunning the previously unbeaten Australia in the semi-final before defeating a determined South African side in the final.

The resilience and spirit they displayed on the field mirror the challenges they’ve faced in their personal lives.

Many of these players hail from small towns across India and modest family backgrounds. Their families made countless sacrifices to nurture their dreams, standing by them when few others did.

These women honed their skills in village lanes, using worn-out bats and makeshift balls, often facing skepticism simply because of their gender. Their legacy is one of perseverance—a story of refusing to give up, even when the odds were stacked against them.

When India’s historic victory was sealed, captain Harmanpreet Kaur spotted her father, Harmandar Singh Bhullar, and ran straight into his arms. She leapt onto him, wrapping her arms and legs around him—a captain and a daughter sharing a moment of pure joy.

Born on 8 March 1989 in Moga, a town in Punjab once infamous as the state’s drug capital, Harmanpreet was raised in a family that valued simplicity, discipline, and hard work.

Her father, a club-level cricketer and clerk at the district court, supported the family by selling milk from their four buffaloes. Buying proper cricket gear was often a luxury they couldn’t afford.

Her first coach, Yadwinder Singh Sodhi, remembered how she trained with worn-out bats and seam-less balls—the only equipment available at the time.
