India Needs More Passenger Aircraft — But Can It Build Its Own?

India’s rapidly growing aviation market is driving a sharp demand for passenger jets, with airlines placing massive orders to keep up with rising domestic and international travel. While the country is set to become one of the world’s largest aviation markets, a key question remains: can India move beyond buying aircraft and start building them?

At present, India relies heavily on global aerospace giants like Boeing and Airbus for commercial passenger planes. Although the country has strong capabilities in aircraft maintenance, engineering services, and defence aviation, large-scale commercial jet manufacturing remains a major challenge. Building passenger aircraft requires advanced technology, deep supply chains, massive capital investment, and decades of certification experience.

India has taken some steps in this direction through government-led initiatives such as Make in India and by strengthening its aerospace ecosystem. Companies like HAL and private players are expanding work on defence aircraft, components, and aircraft structures, while global manufacturers increasingly source parts from Indian suppliers. However, producing a fully indigenous commercial jet would demand long-term policy support, global partnerships, and sustained investment.
