Jeremy Bowen: With the Assads Gone, Syria Breathes More Freely — Yet a Fresh Set of Challenges Now Emerges

According to Jeremy Bowen, Syria today carries a different atmosphere — one that feels noticeably lighter without the decades-long dominance of the Assad family. For many Syrians, the absence of that oppressive political weight has created space for hope, expression, and the possibility of rebuilding their shattered country.

However, Bowen notes that freedom from the Assads has not instantly solved Syria’s deep-rooted issues. The fall of a regime brings its own complications. Power vacuums have opened the door to rival factions, unstable governance, and competing foreign interests. Basic services remain fragile, the economy is still broken, and millions of displaced citizens are unsure when — or if — they can return home.

While the psychological pressure of authoritarian rule has eased, Syrians now face the difficult task of shaping a stable future from the ruins of conflict. The road ahead, Bowen says, may be free of the Assads’ grip, but it is far from free of problems.
