Several Miss Universe contestants walked out of an event after an official from host nation Thailand publicly scolded Miss Mexico in a heated exchange.
During a pre-pageant ceremony, Miss Universe Thailand director Nawat Itsaragrisil reprimanded Fatima Bosch in front of fellow contestants for not posting required promotional content.
When Bosch tried to defend herself, Nawat reportedly called security and threatened to disqualify anyone who sided with her. She then exited the room, with several other contestants following in support.
Footage of the incident, which was live-streamed, quickly spread online. The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) has since denounced Nawat’s “malicious” conduct, prompting him to issue a public apology.
The Miss Universe contestants—each representing their respective home countries—attended Tuesday’s event dressed in their sashes and evening gowns.
In the viral video, several contestants can be heard shouting back at Nawat Itsaragrisil after he raised his voice at Miss Mexico, Fatima Bosch, repeatedly telling her to stop speaking.
As tensions rose, Nawat warned the group: “If anyone wants to continue in the competition, sit down. If you walk out, the rest will carry on.”
Despite his warning, most of the women in the footage remained standing, with many eventually walking out in support of Bosch.
After leaving the event, Bosch told reporters that the 60-year-old director had been “disrespectful” and even called her “dumb.”
Nawat has since denied the accusation, claiming his comments were misinterpreted.
