Former US President Donald Trump has strongly criticised the UK government’s move to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, describing the decision as an act of “great stupidity.” His remarks add to the growing international debate surrounding the future of the strategically important Indian Ocean territory.
Trump argued that relinquishing control of the islands could weaken Western strategic interests in the region, particularly given the presence of a major US-UK military base on Diego Garcia. He suggested that the decision risks empowering rival powers and undermining long-standing security arrangements.
The UK’s plan to transfer sovereignty follows years of legal challenges and diplomatic pressure, including rulings that questioned Britain’s continued control of the islands. While supporters of the move say it addresses historical injustices faced by displaced Chagossians, critics like Trump warn it could have serious geopolitical consequences.
